Diesel's story as told by Carlin Brooks

We would be remiss not to mention our newest company member, Diesel. He travels with us to all our shows and has garnered so much attention because of his size, easy disposition and handsome good looks. We get asked so many questions about him, I’ll tell his story here.

Diesel is a rescue dog and to the best of our knowledge is an Akita. Our veterinarian tells us he is approximately three years old. He was dumped at the Thompson Drag Raceway in November of 2008 according to the folks who operate the track. Diesel had been living there, eating out of garbage cans and consuming leftovers from the concession stand.

In August of 2009, we attended an event at the raceway as vendors. It was a hot, sunny day and promised to get even hotter that afternoon. We pulled into the track with our truck and trailer. Once parked, the biggest, mangiest looking dog appeared and planted himself in the only bit of shade available at the time, which was right under our truck. It seemed, that as much as he wanted a bit of human contact he really had no interest in becoming best friends and maintained his distance from us. His resolve changed later in the evening as the scent of grilling hamburgers and hot dogs filled the air. He accepted our offering of food, then left, not wanting to be touched.

For the next four days he followed me everywhere. I had been adopted. I was the chosen one. Gradually he allowed himself to be petted and I discovered a gentle and playful nature under all the filth and odor. What a nice dog!

All things end and it was time for us to go home on Sunday afternoon. I wanted to take him with us but the truck bed was full and Roy was uneasy letting him in the trailer not knowing what he might do to the cars inside. We had to leave him at the track. He seemed so sad walking off into a field, his head and tail down, knowing that once again he was being left behind. As we pulled out from the track I saw his head come up and a determination to at least try to come with us. He began to chase us down the road until we were out of sight. I cried the better part of that trip home.

I was scheduled to leave for another show in Michigan just two short days later, and so had to wait until the next Sunday to find him. It was getting late when I pulled into the raceway. It would be getting dark soon. My earlier prayer was that if this was meant to be, I would need to find him quickly. My prayers were answered. He was only about a hundred yards out and I saw him immediately. He appeared wary when I first called him and stood his ground. Perhaps he caught my scent but it took nearly a full minute for recognition to set in and he started to run to us full speed. This dog was 100 plus pounds of pure jumping, wriggling, rolling, grunting joy! I named him Diesel.

Since our first encounter, Diesel has cleaned up quite nicely, proven himself loving and loyal and brought new life to my once empty household.

Welcome Home Diesel, Welcome Home!
